Photodynamic therapy is a special treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing chemical called Levulan (5-aminolevulinic acid or ALA), which is activated with the correct wavelength of light. These treatments remove sun damaged precancerous zones and spots, called actinic keratoses. Sun damage, fine lines, and blotchy pigmentation are also improved because of the positive effect of Levulan and the light treatment. Photodynamic treatment also has the unique ability to minimize pores and reduce oil glands, effectively treating stubborn acne vulgaris, acne rosacea, and improve the appearance of some acne scars.
Levulan is applied topically on the treatment area for one hour prior to phototherapy using intense pulsed light (see FotoFacial or IPL: Aging Skin & Sun Damage). Photodynamic therapy enhances the results of pulsed light therapy alone. Patients must avoid direct sunlight following this treatment. Maximum improvement is achieved after a series of 2-3 treatments, 2-4 weeks apart.
